1952 Voluntary 24 hr emergency blood transfusion service started at BAH
Developed by Dr Sevitt and Prof Gissane with the support of Prof Squire and Dr Bull
The service was financed by the Selly Oak Group Hospital Management Committee
The service was introduced so that any patient who needed a blood transfusion after the Lab closed, would have the same effective service as during the day. And to relieve the pressure on the Regional Blood Transfusion Lab
BAH was the first hospital in the country to start a blood transfusion service – some years later other hospitals adopted the service
Founding members of the transfusion service consisted of 7 hand-picked lab staff from the pathology department and the MRC Industrial Injuries and Burns Units. They received an intensive course of instruction from Dr Sevitt
