Studied Medicine in Cardiff and London, specialised in Anaesthesia and was Senior Consultant Anaesthetist at the Acci
Dr Wolfson joined the Birmingham Accident Hospital in its very early days and applied himself to the task of developing an anaesthetic service for a hospital opened solely for the treatment of trauma.
Served for 2 years in the Army – he served with the RAMC in West Africa as a specialist in Anaesthetics
1966-1967 he was President of the Hickman Anaesthetics Society
Traditional approach to anaesthesia in this field was capable of improvement, to this he devoted the next thirty-five years, until his retirement in 1975
This study included the care of the air-way, the transfusion of blood and the pre-operative assessment of the injured patient, and the use of varied anaesthetic techniques. In no discipline were these more finely exhibited than in the treatment of burns.
In the operating theatre his calm manner, immense experience, unfailing good humour, and apparent tirelessness made him popular with staff at all levels.
It was typical of him that he preferred to attend personally to every detail of his anaesthetic technique, and his judgement of a patient’s condition during surgery was masterly.
His views were well summarised in a book, “Anaesthesia for the Injured” published in 1962.
Modest and reserved in manner he was m.ost patient with those who asked for advice or opinion or sought help in the solution of some technical problem.
Became the chairman of the Hospital Medical Staff Committee
He retired in 1975
Outside the Hospital he was a devoted family man to his wife Nancy and their 4 daughters.
He had always been keen on tennis and swimming, the latter of which he kept up until the day of his death on holiday in the South of France on the 7th September 1980
Dr Wolfson’s main outside interest was music. In 1952, at the instigation of the Extra-mural Department of Birmingham university, he was one of a number of people (including Wilfrid Mellers) responsible for forming the Birmingham Chamber Music Society, a now flourishing organisation. He was immediately elected Chairman, a post he held actively until his death
