  • Situated on the top floor, by the main theatres.
  • Mr C Baker, Appliance Clerk – advice and assistance fitting and supplying patient’s appliances and the fitting of various types of equipment for fracture beds. The splint room on the first floor is under his supervision.
  • The department supplies the hospital with all surgical instruments, sundries and other equipment.
  • Supplied sterilise dressings to wards
  • Responsible for supply of all instruments, bowls and surgical trays
  • In the Central Sterile Supplies Department in theatres there were two Manlore Elliott autoclave manned by two members of staff
  • Ordering and changing of gas cylinders came under the department along with the gas manifold room that supplied the piped gases
  • Maintain all apparatus such as ward suckers and other surgical equipment, throughout the hospital.
  • Minor repairs are carried out in the workshop. Beside the department there is the workshop, alongside the Research Workshop (tucked away under the MIU), this workshop contains the necessary equipment for testing metals used in surgical implants, particularly stainless steel.
  • Make prototype surgical implants, if necessary, they alter the implants to fit the patient
  • There is also scope for medical staff to carry out research in this workshop. Particularly regarding the fixation of fractures.
