Kaya Emin Alpar (Aug 1943 – Nov 2005)

Trauma Surgeon

  • Medical Director of the Birmingham Accident Hospital from 1990 to 1993
  • Gained a baccalaureate in 17 subjects at Ankara College, and went on to study medicine at Ankara University – graduated with a first class hons in 1966
  • 1973 he returned to Turkey to complete his National Service, working as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon to the Sarikamis Military Hospital
  • 1980 he moved back to Birmingham as a senior lecturer at the University of Birmingham department of surgery
  • 1981 appointed consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the Birmingham Accident Hospital
  • 1993 he moved to Birmingham General Hospital 
  • 1994 he set up a MMedSci course in surgery of trauma at the University of Birmingham, and was course director until 2000
  • He was chairman of the Institute of Accident Surgery from 1993 to 2002. 
  • He was particularly interested in the treatment of whiplash injury and the association with atypical carpal tunnel syndrome
  • “He pioneered a course in surgery of trauma that became world renowned, and his research activities covered a broad range of subjects and included a novel study on neuropeptides. One of his main interests was in the clinical presentation and diagnosis of atypical carpal tunnel syndrome associated with whiplash injuries”
  • He felt that the trauma surgeon must be a generalist because trauma does not observe anatomical boundaries.
  • As a result of his experience he was much in demand as an expert witness in medico-legal disputes
  • 1966 he married Oya, however they divorced in 2003. They had two sons – Bora and Burak
