Later years

In most of the papers written in relation to the relocation of the Acci, there was also references to developing a T&O strategy that appeared to favour orthopaedics and the ROH.

To allow comparison with earlier years, here are few snippets of information gleaned from various sources.

Beds

1976: 165 trauma beds and 40 burns beds (I doubt the accuracy of these figures 

1987: 139 trauma beds and 30 burns beds (SBHA stats)

1989/90 financial year: 169 beds (SBHA stats)

August 1991: 120 beds in use, 60 closed as part of required financial savings (SBHA stats)

Cause of injuries

1976: of all registrations 23.4% industrial, 22.8% domestic, 8.3% pedestrian, 6.2% involved a motor vehicle. The remainder involved accidents at school, sport and recreational accidents, assault and miscellaneous accidents. Motor vehicle accidents accounted for 18.9% of in-patient admissions and 30% of deaths.

Patient numbers

1976: 40,187 new patients of whom approximately 5000 were in patients.

1986: 5286 emergency inpatient admissions, 33643 outpatient attendances of whom 8430 were new and 46,456 new Casualty registrations

1987: 5950 discharges and deaths, 45840 total Casualty attendances, 26203 outpatient attendances, 53362 physiotherapy treatments, 9252 occupational therapy treatments (SBHA stats)

1989/90 financial year: 50,000 new Casualty cases, 35,000 outpatient attendances and 5,500 inpatients (SBHA stats)

1990/91: Casualty treated 47,634 new patients (SBHA stats)

The hospital closed in 1993>

Skin Culture Service

  • Does not state when the skin lab opened
  • Considered appropriate for the treatment of patients with 30% or more burns
  • Also sometimes used for leg ulcers
  • Collaborative research is being undertaken with the Burns Research Group, Birmingham University, Cambridge University and the Beatson Institute in Glasgow
  • During 1990/91 826 skin grafts were produced covering a total area of 68960 sq. cm
