Magdi Ghoris

Consultant Anaesthetist

  • Trained in Cairo
  • Fellowship in Anaesthetics 1979
  • Senior Registrar training in Birmingham
  • Appointed consultant at Acci in March 1983
  • Consultant Anaesthetist on Team 1 with surgeons Kaya Alpar and Ron Evans
  • Pioneered the introduction of laryngeal mask airways in emergency care, especially for patients with burns, who as a consequence, had limited mouth opening.  As a technique this was frowned upon by the inexperienced, but became national practice
  • He pioneered the introduction of printed theatre notes – something unheard of at the time
  • Magdi was also one of the first anaesthetists to introduce non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) routinely for post-operative pain
  • Magdi moved when the Acci closed to the Birmingham General Hospital and in turn on the closure of the General to Selly Oak Hospital
  • Magdi retired in 2009
  • He was impressed and inspired by the team work on camaraderie at the old “Acci”
