Muriel Jeffcott. SRN. SCM. (Sister “J”) 

  • September 1959: left Hartshill High School, Nuneaton, aged 15 to join a three year Nursing Cadet Scheme. This entailed spending three days a week at Nuneaton Technical College and School of Art obtaining GCEs and two and a half days working at Nuneaton Hospitals. 
  • October 1962 – November 1965: Student nurse Nuneaton Hospitals. 
  • December 1965 – January 1967: Staff nurse, general surgery ward, George Eliot Hospital, Nuneaton. 
  • February 1967 – July 1967:  Pupil Midwife, Part 1, St Stephens Hospital, Chelsea, and Kensington. 
  • September 1967 – February 1968: Pupil Midwife, Part 2, King Street Maternity Hospital, Watford. 
  • April 1968 – October 1969: Midwife, Nuneaton Maternity Hospital. 
  • October 1969 – May 1970: Burns and Plastic Surgery Course, Queen Mary’s Hospital, Roehampton. 
  • May 17th 1970: Sister, Burns Unit, Birmingham Accident Hospital. 
  • April 1st 1976:  Sister in Charge, later Clinical Nurse Specialist. 
  • As my position encompassed a teaching role, I undertook a City and Guilds Further Education Teaching Certificate. 
  • Became a lecturer in burns at Schools of Nursing and the RCN, Hagley Road. Presented at local, national, and international study days, courses, and specialist meetings. Gave talks to Clubs and Societies. 
  • The Burns Unit nursing staff were involved in educational programmes, presented at meetings, and supported students undertaking courses on the unit. 
  • 1985:  Awarded a Birmingham Hospital Saturday Fund Travel Scholarship. Attended an International Burn Meeting in Australia looking at burn care and nurse education. 
  • 1986: Became a member of the International Society for Burn Injuries (ISBI) Nurse Committee. 
  • 1988: Organised the 1st (ISBI) 5 day International Burn Nursing Conference at Imperial College London.
