September 1959: left Hartshill High School, Nuneaton, aged 15 to join a three year Nursing Cadet Scheme. This entailed spending three days a week at Nuneaton Technical College and School of Art obtaining GCEs and two and a half days working at Nuneaton Hospitals.
October 1962 – November 1965: Student nurse Nuneaton Hospitals.
December 1965 – January 1967: Staff nurse, general surgery ward, George Eliot Hospital, Nuneaton.
February 1967 – July 1967: Pupil Midwife, Part 1, St Stephens Hospital, Chelsea, and Kensington.
September 1967 – February 1968: Pupil Midwife, Part 2, King Street Maternity Hospital, Watford.
April 1968 – October 1969: Midwife, Nuneaton Maternity Hospital.
October 1969 – May 1970: Burns and Plastic Surgery Course, Queen Mary’s Hospital, Roehampton.
May 17th 1970: Sister, Burns Unit, Birmingham Accident Hospital.
April 1st 1976: Sister in Charge, later Clinical Nurse Specialist.
As my position encompassed a teaching role, I undertook a City and Guilds Further Education Teaching Certificate.
Became a lecturer in burns at Schools of Nursing and the RCN, Hagley Road. Presented at local, national, and international study days, courses, and specialist meetings. Gave talks to Clubs and Societies.
The Burns Unit nursing staff were involved in educational programmes, presented at meetings, and supported students undertaking courses on the unit.
1985: Awarded a Birmingham Hospital Saturday Fund Travel Scholarship. Attended an International Burn Meeting in Australia looking at burn care and nurse education.
1986: Became a member of the International Society for Burn Injuries (ISBI) Nurse Committee.
1988: Organised the 1st (ISBI) 5 day International Burn Nursing Conference at Imperial College London.
